BRIEF: Portland Timbers reportedly sign Peru winger Andy Polo

Jan. 13--The Portland Timbers have reportedly used targeted allocation money to acquire Peru international Andy Polo from Liga MX side Monarcas Morelia.

ESPN soccer writer Jeff Carlisle reported Saturday that Portland had officially signed Polo. Morelia manager Roberto Hernandez also said that Polo had been transferred following his club's 1-0 Liga MX win over Puebla Friday.

The 23-year-old right winger has been linked to the Timbers for weeks.

According to ESPN, the Timbers are paying a combined $3 million for Polo's transfer fee and salary for the next three years.

Polo joined Morelia in the winter of 2017 and went on to score three goals in 16 appearances during the club's spring campaign. But Polo struggled recently as he failed to find a goal in 10 appearances this fall. Polo has also earned 15 caps for the Peru National Team since 2016.

The Timbers are betting that Polo can regain his form in MLS. Polo is expected to replace longtime Portland midfielder Darlington Nagbe, who the Timbers traded to Atlanta United for $1.05 million in allocation money earlier this offseason.
